The reputation of the UTS Visual Communications course?

I've actually just completed my first year of study in Visual Communications at UTS, and even though I really enjoy the course (despite the sleepless nights and stress) and believe I'm well suited for it, I still have doubts. My main question is regarding the reputation of the UTS VisComm...

The difference between cartesian and parametric equations?

I have to admit I've never really understood the difference between a cartesian and a parametric equation. From what I can gather, the difference is that a cartesian equation involves both the x and the y coordinates in the same equation (e.g. y = x2) while a parametric equation uses another...

    Trigonometry

Thanks. For some reason, the working in the book was completely different to the method you used, I still don't quite understand it...

    Trigonometry

Okay, here's another quetion; Solve the equation cos 2x = sin x for 0 < x < 2pi. I do have a worked solution to this question, but I don't fully understand it, so could you please explain your working in detail?

Finding the Area Beneath Trigonometric Curves

I know the solution to this particular question, but I'm not too sure of the reasoning behind it. The question asks; Two curves, y = (sqrt3)cosx and y = sinx, are drawn on a graph. The first two intersections to the right of the y-axis are labelled A and B. a) Solve the equation (sqrt3)cosx =...

    Estimation of Roots

I realised this a few minutes after posting, but I was busy and couldn't get back to the computer. A stupid mistake to make, but an easy one. Thanks. :)

    Estimation of Roots

For some reason, when I enter the following information in to my calculator, I can't seem to get the correct answer. Could someone possibly explain why this is? The question asks; a) Show that there is a root to the equation sin x = x - 1/2 between x = 0.5 and x = 1.8. [This is the part I'm...

    Binomial Theorem

    Thanks again. :)

    Binomial Theorem

Thanks for that. I seem to be stuck on yet another question, however. I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I just can't seem to get the right answer out. It asks; Find the greatest coefficient of (2x - 1)5. It should be fairly simple. The answer is apparently +/-80.

    Binomial Theorem

Okay, new question; a) Simplify 8Ck/8Ck - 1. [This part is relatively easy, it simplifies to (9 - k)/k]. b) Hence or otherwise, find the greatest coefficient of the expansion of (1 + x)8. [This part I'm having trouble with...] Can anyone please help me?

    Binomial Theorem

Ah, I get it now. Thanks for that. :)

    Binomial Theorem

I'm afraid I don't quite follow the lines of working in bold. Where does the (n - 5)! on the right of the fifth line come from? And why does the 4! on the right of the sixth line disappear?

    Binomial Theorem

I've got another binomial question that I'm stuck on. It asks; The coefficients of x4 and x5 in the expansion of (3 - x)n are equal in magnitude but opposite in sign. Find the value of n.

    Binomial Theorem

    Ah, that makes sense. I have no idea why I didn't realise that nC1 = n, and that 1n - 1 = 1. Thanks.

    Binomial Theorem

    Thanks, guys. :) Got time for another? The expansion of (1 + ax)n is given by 1 - 24x + 252x2 - ... . Find values for a and n.

    Binomial Theorem

I got a similar answer for part a), but according to the textbook the answer should be nCk. The answer for part b) is definately correct though.

    Binomial Theorem

    I'm not sure how to approach this question, can anyone help me? It asks; Simplify; a) n - 1Ck - 1 + n - 1Ck b) 10Ck ÷ 10Ck - 1

    Trigonometric Equations

I'm not sure how to tackle this question, can anyone help me out? It asks; a) Show that (1 - cos2x)/(1 + cos2x) = tan2x. b) Hence find the value of tan 22.5o in simplest exact form.

    Inverse Functions

    I'm not quite sure how to tackle this question. It asks; a) Find the value of x such that sin-1x = cos-1x. b) On the same diagram, sketch the graphs of y = sin-1x, y = cos-1x and y = sin-1x + cos-1x. With this second part, I'm able to sketch the graphs of y = sin-1x and y = cos-1x, but I'm...

    Probability

Now I have a new problem; A sample of 3 coins is taken at random from a bag containing 8 ten cent coins and 8 twenty cent coins. Find the probability that a particular ten cent coin will be chosen, if 1 twenty cent and 2 ten cent coins are chosen.
