Is an honours year mainly just supervised independent research or you still go and attend lectures or something?

It depends on the field and the university. I did mine in Commerce and USyd’s program is 40% coursework and 60% thesis. The coursework element includes 3 units (with lectures etc), which I had to take in my first semester.
