I have just finished Year 11 Preliminaries and I'm unsure whether to drop Physics or Business Studies. I go to a rank 300+ school and for Physics my prelim mark was 38% and a ranking of 7/30 while Business Studies I got 67% with a rank of 23/50 and I'm not sure how scaling works so any advice would be helpful. Thanks

Do you know how many Band 6's your school gets for these subjects per yr? You can check on HSC Ninja and count for the previous 3 yrs.

Edit: I just realised you said your school's ranked 300+.

In that case ask you teachers if they know what HSC marks people in your rank got in previous years. They might have that info.

In terms of scaling, physics scales better, but there's no point of a good scaling subject if your cohort overall does bad.

drop business for sure. what a shit low-scaling subject. i can't believe my mid band 5 is worth the same as a low band 6 in business 💀

if u want to do business studies just do economics. business studies isn't even a real subject name

physics will get SOOOO easy in year 12 if u like humanities and hate maths. 70% of the paper is just writing so it should be easy to get a low band 5

For Physics 1 person got a band 6 and for business 3 people got a band 6

In that case it might be difficult for you to get a band 6 in either (but still anything is possible). Do you know roughly the marks of last yrs cohorts? In which subject was the average higher?

I'm personally heavily biased towards physics because I think it's easier to drastically improve your marks in and it scales and aligns better. That is, lets say you got 76 in HSC, your mark will become 86 and then, after, it will scale better than other subjects at 86.

But for business if you need 81 to get aligned to 86 and after that it will scale less.

But it depends because what if your cohort is bad at physics and you get raw 81 in business and only 65 in physics. In that case business will be better.

I hope this makes sense because its a lot to understand.

raw 76 quite high. that would've been 88 last year
