Hey guys,
I was just wondering between NGO and Sons and AlJabr I am currently in the specialist class for NGO, but I feel like there isn't much teaching going on its more so a bunch of selective kids just spamming the booklets and I really kinda struggle but do get the hang out of it. I feel like I'm just learning how to do questions and not really the theory or understanding behind them. So I was wondering whether to switch or continue with them while trying to learn the theory with textbooks and youtube. I would appreciate any advice or information about any tutoring that is willing to actually 'teach' the concept while being rigorous with their standard of questions. Also I'm not trying to defame or slander NGO, this was just my personal experience so far. Their 3u is fine for me though because conceptually they are not hard to understand and I do perfectly fine, 4u is my main concern.

PS I am non selective, aiming to do 4u maths

okay this probably isn't what you're looking for but, from my experience, any group tutoring will have that sort of 'teaching' style, because that's what gets them results - spamming questions without guaranteeing thorough understanding. as someone who's never been to tutoring and with friends in similar situations (or occasionally seeing private tutors), I can guarantee you that you don't need it to do well, even at the super high levels. the spamming method works for some, and that's why tutoring businesses continue to flourish, but not everyone benefits from them, and you might just be one of those people. if you want a tutor who actually tries to teach the content, you'll probably have more luck with a private tutor, because they tend to focus more on consolidation. (or you could wing it, although I understand that would be scary in HSC year.) but seriously, you can learn 4U from a textbook pretty easily, in my opinion, if you have a supportive teacher at school.

I hope you find a place that works!

Hi,
Thank you for your advice what textbooks do you recommend, I currently am doing Terry Lee and cambridge, also do you have any recommendations for proofs like any resources or specific things you recommend for it?

Thank you

if your school pays for resources, use those - I've never tried edrolo, atomi, etc. but I assume they will help!
terry lee tends to be pretty hard (I have an outdated version), and cambridge is okay for early questions but the more extension ones tend to be a bit weird to me, I dunno

if your school has access to SmarterMaths that's probably the best resource as it's directly HSC questions. I've been using the free online howardmathematics one a lot, because it's simple so I can get through it pretty easily and then focus on exam-style questions. (note that mechanics teaches a topic that's no longer in the syllabus, but everything else is correct.)

is ngo and sons good for yr 12 chem?
I personally don't go there so I can't say, but from what I have heard NGO is really only known for maths their other subjects aren't really that great. The reason they have good results is most kids who do 4u/3u go there for the discounts they offer giving them their reputation. I would say if you are willing to pay go to Zhangs? or PEAK even SIGMA science they are all specialised in sciences. Especially cuz mr Roy Fu teaches in PEAK and he is genuinely the goat of Chemistry really good teacher, plus PEAK offers discounts if you rank top 30 I think in their exams. Either way if you are price sensitive, NGO is the cheapest out there but for science I believe self study is best I go for math becoz of the variety of questions I need exposure too and to get ahead. Best of luck with chem, and once again I don't do chem (physics guy) and take my advice with a grain of salt

Thank you, I have the new terry lee book if you'd like I can send a link to it, its quite good and the solutions give you show faster methods. I'll try out the HowardMaths
