Western Australian Universities

Perth

Situated on the banks of the Swan River, Perth is the largest city in Western Australia. It’s a great place to study because the cost of living is fairly low (when compared with other major Australian cities), and it’s also got a relaxed atmosphere. Plus it’s easy to get around by train, bus, bicycle or on foot.

Four major universities can be found in Perth: Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University and the University of Western Australia – drawing students from Australia and the rest of the world. The sunny Perth weather tends to attract those who enjoy being outdoors.

In the centre of town you’ll find a bustling shopping and entertainment district. This is where you’ll find Perth’s best shops and restaurants.

To enjoy some fresh air, head over to Kings Park. Located just behind St George’s College, this is one of the largest inner-city parks in the world. A stroll through the beautiful Botanic Gardens will give you an opportunity to clear your head whenever you need a break from studying.

Or if you’d prefer a dip in the ocean, head over to Cottesloe beach. Another great beach – especially popular with young people – is Scarborough, which offers great waves and a thriving nightclub culture.

Fremantle is another area of Perth that tends to draw a younger crowd. It’s located on the coast (20 minutes from the city centre) and it’s home to a vibrant community of artists and musicians.

If you’re going to relocate, it’s worth considering the distance of Perth from other cities. It may be prudent to visit and test the waters a bit, first. If you decide to drop in, you can find cheap flights and hotels in Perth on a site like Webjet.

Broome

Broome is located on the north west coast of Australia. Many tourists pass through Broome on their way to the Kimberley region, which gives the town a relaxed, holiday vibe.

Edith Cowen University and the University of Notre Dame both have campuses in Broome. It is a very pleasant place to live thanks to its tropical climate and beautiful scenery, however if you’re the kind of person who doesn’t enjoy hot weather, this probably isn’t the place for you.

The cost of living is very reasonable, and it’s also easy to get around as there isn’t a lot of traffic. Plus the peace and serenity is very conducive to study.

Edith Cowan University (ECU) is a modern, dynamic and innovative university that prides itself on producing graduates who can operate effectively in today’s globalised workplace.

The key defining values of ECU are service, professionalism and enterprise. The University has a reputation for teaching excellence that dates back to the turn of the century. Courses are provided in the following Faculties: Business and Public Management; Communications, Health and Science; Community Services, Education and Social Sciences and the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA@ECU).

ECU has four metropolitan campuses in Perth, located in the suburbs of Joondalup, Mount Lawley, Churchlands and Claremont. Plans are underway to consolidate activities to the Joondalup and Mount Lawley campuses over the next five or so years. A regional campus is located at the city of Bunbury (200 kms south-west of Perth).

The University has approximately 20,000 students enrolled in over 160 courses at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. In addition to Australian students, the University has more than 1,600 international students who originate from more than 60 countries.

From its early entry into electronic distance education, ECU has developed a track record for technology based learning systems that are amongst the most advanced in Australia. More than half of the university’s student population utilise its virtual campus. Many courses are available exclusively through on-line study.

ECU works closely with private and public sector organisations, locally and overseas, in designing its study programmes. An emphasis on conducting research with industry partners in areas such as e-commerce, police studies, and human genetics has seen ECU develop a lively applied research culture.

The University’s strategic location in Perth, Australia’s western gateway to Asia and the Indian Ocean region, has resulted in ECU developing a strong focus on overseas activities. These include the off-shore delivery of a variety of courses in a number of countries in the region, student and staff exchange programmes with other universities, joint research activities, international consultancies and individual academic links.

Murdoch is a dynamic, modern university with some of the best-qualified academic staff in Australia and a flexible outlook that lets students ‘design’ the degree they need for their future.

As a result, in 1998 Murdoch was ranked the best teaching campus of all Australia’s public universities by an independent national survey of university graduates, and equal first in federal government performance figures. It continually ranks as the best teaching campus in Western Australia.

This high standing was enhanced by two awards in the Prime Minister’s 1998 Australian Awards for University Teaching and other awards such as the inaugural federal Minister’s Prize for Achievement in Science and the Prime Minister’s National Employer Award for Higher Education. And, Murdoch is the only university to achieve The Good Universities Guide’s five-star rating for graduate satisfaction for five consecutive years.

A Murdoch education is designed to foster those qualities of imagination and independence of mind on which professional and personal development ultimately depend. Murdoch students are taught to think independently and critically. The university offers study opportunities in Biological and Environmental Science; Veterinary and Biomedical Science; the Law; Business; Information Technology; Media studies; the Humanities; Mathematics; the Physical Sciences; Engineering; Education; and the Social Sciences.

Murdoch was established as a research university and remains one of the leading research universities in Australia, with a very high proportion of Ph.D-level staff who are active in research and generating research income. Its work has national and international relevance in areas such as biotechnology; intellectual property law; agriculture; science and technology; tourism; hydrometallurgy; renewable energy; and modern Asia. Murdoch’s readiness work with commercial and public sector partners means its research and development strategies already are aligned to take advantage of the Federal Government’s initiatives on research in the tertiary sector. Its total research income increased in 2000 and Murdoch achieved particular success in the ARC SPIRT system, which rewards industry collaboration.

Murdoch is home to more than 12,000 students and 1200 staff, including 1300 overseas students from about 40 different countries.
