    USYD Scholarships

Yeah I got that letter too, it probably just a letter to confirm your application. I didnt see any mention of interview or anything like that anywhere, so I was under the impression that uai and application were the only two determining factors. I maybe wrong though =P

whats the scaling like in engineering??

How do you know it didnt count towards your UAI?

The 2004 HSC - Engineering Studies Paper

well then i'd be a millionaire cos my school didnt teach me half of what was in the exam haha

Option 2 - Shipwrecks, Corrosion and Conservations

yeah, but in both cells, oxidation still occurs at the anode and reduction at the cathode. and for the oxidation, I used the: 2OH- -> 1/2O2 + H2O +2e- added 2H+ to both sides to get: H2O -> 1/2O2 + 2H+ + 2e-

The big ugly AAS reliability/validity question

I wrote it was good, but it could have been improved by: -collecting more samples -using a graph and line of best fit instead of taking the average

    testing for phosphate ion

yeah I put yellow with silver, I think thats right (its right in the macquarie revision guide anyway :P)

Option 2 - Shipwrecks, Corrosion and Conservations

argh, dont tell me I got that simple question wrong! :( I thought that the oxidation potential of water was -0.4, whole the oxidation potential of Br- was -1.08. So since the water had a higher ox. potential, it would oxidise first. What did everybody else get?

    question thirteen

I put (C) I found the molecular mass of propanol, then the moles of propanol burnt, then the heat given off. Then just plug the numbers into q=mct to find t.
  9. S

now that you've done the exam what do you think you'll get

Probably high 80's. I know I've lost 4 marks so far, and I'll probably lose more from those extended response questions.

Option 2 - Shipwrecks, Corrosion and Conservations

For the electrolytic cell, i put the oxidation and reduction of water.

    Q14 in multiple choice??

isnt it D? Because the one on the negative electrode is the one where electrons are being released, which is oxidation. So I figured that the one on the negative electrode oxidised more easily. And it said in "increasing" order. So the least was on the left. Can somebody smart and good...

Option 2 - Shipwrecks, Corrosion and Conservations

Yeah I wrote the top ship was on land. I'm also glad that there werent any stupid restoration questions, as I didnt know anything about them. Too bad I didnt get to mention sporovibrio desulfuricans :)

The 2004 HSC - Engineering Studies Paper

For the counter weight question, I put the tension as 3 times the weight force of the coutnerweight. I figured that because there are 2 pulleys, the mechanical advantage must be 3. Can somebody confirm this?

The 2004 HSC - Engineering Studies Paper

yeah, I guessed A as well, and my friends who did electronics said it was right, cos the pointed thing in the end means OR.

The 2004 HSC - Engineering Studies Paper

Yeah, I thought it was a pretty easy exam as well, not really any surprises. I didnt do that well though, because I didnt revise a few things properly, like heat treatments and materials testing, so I forgot what they were. As usual, there were a few common sense questions and calculations...
