My area of study is in the 2nd band (annual cost is about $7000). If I choose to pay upfront will that mean that I will get a 20% discount and have to pay $5600 instead? Is that what most people do?

its like the funnel effect... as you go further into your degree at uni, it gets harder to get into med because there is a lot more competition.
if you desperately want to do med, repeat yr 12 and do it at UWS in 2007. UWS apparently poached one of the med professor from melbourne to teach...

But to be honest the english tutor was crap simply because he had too many students to deal with esp. when his teaching most texts from the modules. He knows what his talking about tho..

You have to get a good score in STAT and have a good UAI to get into usyd pharm. UMAT is not required for entry into usyd pharm but i think it is require in one of the victorian unis
