aboriginals need to be more proactive in achieving their own goals rather than being reliant on the government to do everything for them. In terms of education, there are so many schemes/scholarships/leeways for aboriginals to pursue tertiary education, and yet you see very few taking advantage of it. You can say that the lack of educational facilities, access to schools etc. may be working against them, but i think you'll find that even these obstacles can be overcome, its just that a lot of people in that community aren't bothered to get a "whitefella" education.

Speaking five days after a fracas embroiling the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, he said: ''I struggle with this hypocrisy, particularly when they seem happy to intervene in the affairs of other countries but become very defensive when criticised for their treatment of the first peoples of this land.''

yep fair point
invade the nt and force democracy upon them?

''I will always condemn bad manners and unnecessarily aggressive behaviour by whomever. But I will always defend people's rights to assert their political position and try to look to the heart of why people feel so oppressed that they feel violent confrontation is the only recourse to the resolution of their position,'' he said.

this seems to be a trait in indigenous populations though

"Customary laws, which sustained indigenous societies for millenniums, remained subjugated to those of the settler state, while Aborigines remained over-represented in jails and still died on average 10 to 17 years earlier than other Australians, he said.

If there was any parallel with Gandhi's wish to ''get the Empire out of India'', it would be to displace the rule of the public service from Aboriginal people's lives so they could express indigenous values that existed in Australia before the British arrived, he said"

oh so they want 2 sets of laws. one for whites one for blacks

But they still exist, in some places if a black man gets out of jail e.g. for murder, his people still have to spear him because they don't think he's been punished yet

haha yeah

nah really though how would you incorporate aboriginal customary law into our law system it seems impossible considering the vastly different focus (punishment v rehabilitation) and the different standards of punishment.

would you rather spend 25yrs in gaol or take a spear to the thigh
