Re: History & Memory - Related Texts

I'm currently doing History and Memory and the text we are using is "True History of the Kelly Gang" by Peter Carey. Any suggested H&M additional texts for that one?

I'm using Maus (comic book) and the Spielberg documentary, Survivors of the Holocaust.

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

Can we have one of these for the module 'Conflicting Perspectives' please? They seem to get a lot more attention if there's an "important" notice stickying it to the top.

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

We're studying the 50th gate. our whole class is finding it incredibly hard to find related texts and our teacher's absolutely no help. I don't want to do one relating to the Holocaust though...
I would do Big Fish but I thought it had to be someone looking back over an historical event?? This module sucks =.=

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

Hey,
I'm doing this topic currently and just went searching for some related texts. My teacher suggested that a text qualifies if you can find 'historical' references for the texts that you choose and you can discuss the differences between the history behind the story, and the way the creation shows the story, then it can be used. For example - i am looking at the possibilities of using either Hotel Rwanda, Munich, Catch a Fire or The Colour of Freedom.

Hope that helps

do we know if the related texts have to actually be of someone's memory/looking back (fictional or non-fictional) as well as the historical references? that's what our class was told, for the memory element, but it's awfully hard to find one that fits both...

Akira Kurosawa's 'Rashomon'.

I strongly advise you look for this film and watch it. I don't do History & Memory, but I have the feeling it'd be perfect.
this is the perfect related for conflicting perspective...but not so much H &M

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

I'm doing representation of History and Memory and the book we are doing is The Fiftieth Gate by Mark Baker. My teacher said that its a good idea to choose another holocaust text as well as a text with a different context and representation of history and memory. I was wondering if The Manchurian Candidate would be good for this?

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

it's not that I hate this topic, it's just that I find it kind of stupid.

I'm finding it so hard to find related texts :(

I wanted to use Leni's memoirs, but all I have are just annotated extracts which isn't helping my case..

and Pliny the Younger's letters to his friend about the Vesuvius eruption.

so so stuck :(

okay .. this might be far-fetched..
but Homer's Iliad? or would that be too .. mythological to relate to H&M?

Re: History & Memory: Related Texts

would there be a serious problem with having two films as my related texts? are we supposed to have a different medium for each text?

We're studying the poetry of denise levertov in class, an I already have Forrest Gump as a related text, and wanted to do Life is Beautiful but ended up reading Huckleberry Finn instead, however i gave up on it a quarter of the way through because i couldn't stand the language the characters used.

As far as I'm aware Life is Beautiful is no longer on the syllabus. Unless you (or anyone else) have evidence to suggest otherwise?
