Bobis' poem “this is where it begins' ' encapsulates the notion of intergenerational connections to cultural heritage through the power of storytelling and memories. Through the connection to cultural heritage and the use of linguistic features, Bobis adeptly explores how intergenerational stories/memoriees passed down from ancestors not only critique but also affirm the origins of both individual and collective cultural identities despite the effects of immigrant experiences. In “this is where it Begins' ', Bobis expresses the resdiscovery of her Filipino heritage by recollecting memories and stories past down from previous ancestors.thus deepening her cultural affiliation amidst immigrant experiences. The use of anaphora when appreciating these stories is explored in the phrase, “They have never left us, they who storytold before… under our skin” emphasises the interconnectedness to cultural heritage by using stories from ancestral generations to reconnect with cultural heritage, binding individuals to their heritage. Bobis conveys how ancestral stories are ingrained into our identities, which communciates the cultural values of storytelling, and reconnects individuals to cultural heritage. This suggests that storytelling/memories can deepen the connection to our heritage, reflected with the links to our ancestors. Furthermore, Bobis delves into the connections to cultural heritage in the personification in “storytelling is not lonely”. This expresses storytelling as a collective act that defines individuals as one, rather than isolated. This transforms it into a communal act that unites, rather than isolates, underscoring its role in shaping collective cultural identities. More so, Bobis applies linguistic features to restore connections with cultural roots. The symbolism in “the umbilical cord restored” poignantly illustrates howlanguage allows us to reconnect with our origins that nurtured us. The stories enable migrants to re-establish connections with their past heritage, symbolising a child’s connection with their mother in the form of an umbilical cord. The rich tapestry of memories and stories in Bobis’s poetry vividly captures the essence of cultural identity as an evolving narrative, shaped significantly by the voices of the past and present. This exploration posits storytelling as pivotal in sustaining the connection to cultural heritage thereby effectively fostering a profound connection to heritage that influences both individual and collective identity.
