UNSW definitely has a lot of various societies and clubs you can join into through ARC, the student organization program. Events and parties are organized both within specific courses (for e.g Business, Science, Engineering, Medicine, etc) or as a whole, where other universities can also join as well. The most recent example was something called the White Party Cruise (though that doesn't seem like it will be happening anytime soon, lol)

The societies are kind of dead at the moment ngl due to the covid and being unable to organise any events in person. But probably after restrictions decrease and things go back to normal eventually, that will fix itself. There are lots of societies on a whole range of different things such as types of sport, societies based on the faculty or school and nationality. The uni doesn't really run the events other than the things like Open Day, but more so it's left up to the individual societies on what they do. In those they will have their own parties or gathering events

There are events and parties that you generally go to as a first year and then never consider attending again.
Yeah Toga parties especially.

Otherwise I used to enjoy going to Trivia at the Uni pub.

Not worth sacrificing one year just for a proper experience. The uni experience in Australia is not really all that you might think it is. There are societies and events but itโ€™s not as wild as it may be made out to be in movies or other countries like America. Most of the events run aside from the parties are like chill meetups mostly focused on meeting people and making friends. This is partly due to most people donโ€™t live on campus or close so a lot of students just straight home after class because the tranpost might be in excess of 1 hour, compared to other countries where you might live on the campus. So although it might be annoying not being able to engage in the events straightaway even if itโ€™s for purpose of just making friends you have a degree that goes for like 4 years, so you have plenty of time to do this. Societies are still doing events online so you can still meet new people and make friends if you really want to

Other thing is that usually the purpose of a gap year is for doing some productive like going travelling or getting a job full-time to make money if maybe you canโ€™t afford the uni directly. Those things are probably limited by the covid as itโ€™s unlikely you will be able to do any travel, so basically you would just be sitting at home for 1 year.

Why donโ€™t people live on campus

People do live on campus, but that is mostly international students or people who the uni is very far away from like other states or rural areas. It costs too much. Trying to pay $300-400 a week a rent and then all the other bills straight of high school, very few people going to be able to afford that. Not really cost effective if you can just spend 5-10 dollar a day instead on opal and just travel there instead
