It's an hour long essay on Heart of Darkness/Modernism. I have three themes and I'm wondering if seven quotes is enough for an essay that's expected to be more than five pages?? I also have two quotes from critics, which I guess makes that nine.

I would advise you to have a few more-to back up your argument, the most important thing to remember is that you must answer the given essay question and answer nothing but the given essay question to get the best marks possible:)Best wishes for your exam:)

Also, focus on certain "scenes" rather than just quotes in isolation. So for example, you might want to use Kurtz's death as one scene, in which you may have 4-5 quotes on various elements (e.g. dialogue with Kurtz/Marlowe, descriptions of the setting, some perhaps on Marlowe's own thoughts during the events).

This lets you demonstrate deeper focus and understanding of the text. Think of it as a sniper rifle instead of a shotgun.
