hi im in a selective school (top 30) and i was wondering how the scaling for ancient history looks like. what raw mark would i need to get for it to scale up to a band 6. im currently averaging an 88 so i think im not making the cut for a band 6 yet. lmk what i need to achieve.

common misconception as what you’re referring to is alignment, not scaling

search up “hsc raw marks database” for info on raw to aligned marks (somewhat limited for ancient history)

it’s also basically impossible to tell whether your current internal average of 88 would be indicative of a b6 as your final hsc mark.

best way to gauge is to check your school’s ancient history b6s in previous years on hscninja. even that, however, is limited by cohort variability, so you may also want to consult your teachers as to how “strong” your cohort looks compared to previous ones

check out this thread for more clarification on alignment / scaling / moderation

i dont rlly get it, on the website it says 2023 - raw mark 83, aligned mark 89, then 2023- raw mark 81, aligned mark 89
1. how can oen person's mark which is lower still align to the same mark as anotehr persons which is higher
2. r these marks from the actaual hsc exam or internals asw

so would this just be the hsc exam raw mark itself, or like internals or overall

1. That would indicate that based of that year, that 81 and 83 that maybe that the person who got 83 might have got a lower mark in one section or that the person who got 81 did better in one section.
2. Your internal marks have no influence on your final HSC mark or ATAR, only your internal rank and rank distance from thr top rank matter. For example, if in your cohort there is a ten mark distance internally which separates rank 1 from say rank 50 and even one person gets 100 in the exam, then everyone between rank 1 and rank 50 will get a HSC Assessment Mark somewhere between 90 and 100. You keep your exam mark, it has no influene from your internal mark and then your HSC Mark is the average of these two.

slight correction — saying “ten mark distance internally” might be misleading as the assessment mark range is determined by an EXTERNAL top and bottom bookend (ie top and bottom external exam scores in your school cohort, excluding outliers)

these two bookends are 2 of 3 ‘anchor points’, with the 3rd being the school’s mean exam mark

so, the relative internal mark differences are essentially projected onto that bookended range and mean to produce a moderated assessment mark for each student
