Not sure how an integration question with a given substitution can really separate those studied vs those who haven’t?
Yeah this.

They tried this in 2014 and it kinda came to bite them back.

Complex substitution man like being forced to solve integral of sin^5(x) via separating into terms of e^ipi. I’ve seen it maybe 3 or 4 times in trials and miscellaneous questions so it’s fairly rare.
If they "force" you to use a certain method they must provide enough details for you to discern what the method is, and then it becomes easier (e.g they cannot say using complex numbers integrate etc)

Unlikely going to happen because the syllabus only covers integration over real numbers. You start to run into rigour issues (e.g. how do you account for the fact that ordering does not exist for complex numbers like it does for real numbers?) that need to be established first when integrating over the complex number system, which makes it outside the scope of the syllabus and reserved for university courses in complex analysis.

That block one in the sample paper i was sure my solution was wrong but it was right haha

it just seemed so informal haha
Yeah I was working it out and it seemed so wrong lol but I guess thats why its a miscellaneous type question since its more logical rather than methodical

I mean thinking back on it, it makes perfect logical sense.

But when youre so used to doing it algebraically it just feels... wrong.

Yeah, I know. Just would be interesting to see them throw it at us.

I have a bunch of smarter math papers from past hsc exams that I'm planning to complete a second time.
