    HSC sample answer 2009

In regards to 29a) I think the sample answer is just worded strangely. It says the surrounding tissue causes less attenuation of the X-ray signal and appears dark, so therefore it should be implying that the film will appear brighter in the areas where the barium is concentrated - which ought to...

    Studying for engineering studies

Not sure how much the syllabus has changed since 2011, but I think I was lucky in that my teacher pretty much talked us through everything we needed to know for short and long response answers. Otherwise, I reckon you should still be fine following through the textbook material - Excel HSC...

Which topic is the hardest in your opinion?

Motors and Generators definitely seems to manage to confuse a lot of people every year, judging by the questions on the phys subforums :P Quanta to Quarks imo, is difficult only in terms of the volume of information required for you to regurgitate (at least, it felt that way to me). My school...

    engineering syllabus questions

Why not just put the questions up in the thread? This subforum is pretty much for asking questions about HSC engineering anyway. :/

    Engineering Studies 2013 Specimen Examination

The thing on the left is a section of the end of the antenna anchor rod, showing the small pin that runs through it. If I remember my engineering drawing correctly, the reason this has been done is that there's a hex nut over the threaded section of the rod, which excludes the rod from being...

Is engineering important ? URGENT QUESTION !!!!

Not particularly important. Basically it's a bunch of topics that you mostly cover again (although much faster) in the first year of engineering at uni. Helpful if you have trouble wrapping your head around this stuff, but honestly doing maths is more useful for you. Physics is about the same...

    Engineering Studies 2013 Specimen Examination

Hard to explain without drawing it out, but it's an angle bracket. Bottom face has a countersunk hole in it and a sort of bevelled or angled edge and is square, and the vertical face has one rounded corner and one square corner, as well as a hole through. I'll see about drawing it out if I can...

    Engineering Scaling

To OP, don't worry about scaling at this stage. Just study hahaha. You'll be fine.

    text book recommendations

Try searching for Excel HSC Engineering, Copeland's Student Handbook for Engineering, and An Introduction to Engineering Mechanics by Schlenker. First two are pretty decent at explaining things, third is awesome for calculation questions, although parts of it are more in depth than what the...

    Some engineering questions

Hello, if you still need help could you please link to the relevant paper on the BoS website?

    Raw mark for band 6?

Probably 90+, I reckon? My class and I all got band 6s and we were all in the 90+ range for our HSC mark. EDIT: This was in 2011 btw.

    Option Topic.

In my experience everything I learned in HSC physics turns out like this: "Yeah, that's a very simple version of what actually happens. Now we're going to teach you this method of doing things." Most helpful thing for me was probably kinematics and friction and such - which was rehashed and...

USyd vs. UNSW vs. UTS for Engineering.

I decided to stay away from USyd engineering based on the fact that all their buildings are 60s architecture and all cloistered away in the corner of the campus :P Of course, this means that now I have to walk up the massive hill everyday at UNSW haha.

    Angular Velocity Qs

Basic method of doing that sort of question is to figure out velocity in rad/s using the given stuff (any of the usual kinematics equations). Then multiply by the radius (if I remember right) in order to convert to m/s. That'll be your angular velocity.

    Some engineering questions

You've gotten the conversion from GPa to Pa wrong. Giga is 109, not 106. Nothing else seems wrong, so your answer should only be off by a factor of 1000. Pre-tensioned reinforcement in concrete beams sets up compressive forces throughout the whole beam. These stresses will tend to close up...
