From Biki
English is the only compulsory subject in the New South Wales Higher School Certificate. All students complete the "Area of Study" Module as part of their course in English as a Second Language (ESL), Standard English, or Advanced English. The remainder of the course material varies with the path of study selected by the student.
Students who study Advanced English have the option of completing one or two Extension units in addition to the compulsory two units. These subjects are commonly known as 3 and 4 Unit English, although they are officially referred to as English Extension 1 and English Extension 2 respectively.
Students who undertake either Standard or English as a Second Language have the option of completing the Fundamentals of English course as either a one or two unit Preliminary course to aid them in their studies. The Fundamentals of English course is designed to provide assistance in developing the skills required for English in the Higher School Certificate. It may be undertaken flexibly over the Preliminary and HSC years.
