A maximum scaled mark less than 50.0 (on a 1-unit basis) means
that the maximum mark for that course was 'capped' at a particular
value. This is done to dissuade 'very able' students from 'dumbing
down' and exploiting the system by procuring a high ranking in a
course with a 'less able' candidature. As with scaled means, the
maximum marks are liable to change, as the scaling process is carried
out afresh each year.
The actual calculation of the maximum scaled marks is explained
in detail in the Report
on the Scaling of the 2002 NSW HSC, which is produced by
the Technical Committee on Scaling and published by the UAC. The
process is such that the maximum scaled mark of the combined
English (Standard) and English (Advanced) candidatures will always
be 50.0. Neither of those courses are capped, despite any apparent
statistics to the contrary. A maximum scaled mark of 0 indicates
that either the course was not taken in that year, or that the maximum
scaled mark was not published.
